Written by Award Winner, Leading Eating Disorder Expert:
Dr. Kathleen Fuller
Kathleen Fuller's book is amazing and wonderful. She addresses all areas of eating issues and renders a solution for all. This book is thorough but simplistic, in-depth but very easy to read and understand. Her work and exercises are simple to follow and produce lasting life long results. A must read for anyone with any kind of eating issues!!
Serendipity may well come into play at all times in our lives, but for me receiving and reading psychotherapist, hypno-therapist, lecturer, and author, Kathleen Fuller's book, "Not Your Mother's Diet: The Cure for Your Eating Issues," came at a moment where the necessity for spiritual guidance became a pivotal concern in my life.
I'd been wrestling with a dilemma that concerned a good friend of mine that challenged my very definition of friendship. After discovering some things about this person that just didn't add up in what I deemed a positive way, I found myself running through the gamut of emotions: betrayal, incredulity, anger, disgust--and then as these stronger lower level feelings faded I climbed my superiority pedestal and emoted sadness and compassion and the final thanks-be-to-the-Almighty, "Wow, aren't you thrilled to the gills that you don't have to stoop that low."
Simultaneously to receiving Fuller's book, out of the most beautiful blue, I began a wonderful correspondence with an extraordinary someone on the Internet that instantly understood that with which I was struggling. From him came and still comes a marvelous nudging to recognize and follow my own path. Acceptance and love was the answer, but recognizing this is simple, doing is extremely difficult. My Internet Guru urged me to meditate and let the power of my imagination give me the answer.
Lo and behold, I begin to read "Not Your Mother's Diet." Expecting to read yet another diatribe about eating natural foods in smaller portions complete with a 30-day calorically acceptable breakfast, lunch and dinner plan mapped out with appropriate blanks for transgressions and substitutions, I find instead a guide to discovering myself. Just what the doctor ordered! Fuller gets right to the point up front--understand your imbalance and its gradual elimination will follow. On a broader plane, her keys to success can be utilized in every aspect of life, not just conquering the dieting frontier.
Fuller starts the reader off with exercises that better acquaint the reader with his/her true self. As her techniques encompass those utilized by many licensed spiritual therapists (the book itself is laid out in a workbook fashion), the reader quickly grasps in an ah-ha type moment that quite obviously it is the mind that is preventing ultimate success, be it dieting success or otherwise. Fuller provides the mental bulldozer to rid oneself of self imposed roadblocks with the formidable directive to live in the present--the NOW--rather than in the shade of the past with all its un-fixable disappointments.
With each chapter, Fuller hands over the tools to empower and take charge. Fuller's arsenal is too plentiful to explain entirely, but, trust me, her weaponry is not only extensive but complete. Many of her techniques are simple to do--spoken aloud verbalizations and imaginings while meditating within the confines of the mind's special place. She teaches you how to identify hidden feelings in order to take positive action and plot a `genogram', an interesting tool used in understanding influences in that resembles a family tree but maps out the emotional relationships between family members to enable one to understand where certain mentalities originate. All the exercises move the reader towards a sense of self-awareness and leads to actually becoming comfortable in the skin he/she is in.
Fuller mentions a few diet books to use in conjunction with this workbook, so don't expect any food commentaries or "take small bites" dieting tips--"Not Your Mother's Diet" strictly addresses the idea of inner healing towards balance where the weight loss will follow as a natural progression.
For me, Dr. Fuller's exercises lent insight to myself and helped me to see the problem I was facing from another vantage point. After all we look at other people and as we are all human beings connected in some metaphysical way, we see mirrors of ourselves.
Bottom line? If you are expecting Kathleen Fuller's "Not Your Mother's Diet' to provide the usual sensible diet information, think again. There are no menus or tips to be garnered here. Recommendations on certain programs contained in other books, yes. However, as Fuller astutely cites, true wellness comes from a healing of self, requiring intimate understanding of the mechanisms that hold us back from attaining our true selves. Through a series of repetitive exercises, Fuller gets us to see ourselves from within and to trace back our disability and dysfunction with regard to dieting failures with a truer understanding of self. In any regard, "Not Your Mother's Diet" outlines a program that will provide anyone with the keys to greater self-awareness. Recommended with gratitude to Dr. Fuller's insight.

Handle Your Eating Issues and Make Your Dreams Come True, April 12, 2009
Working as the pre-publication editor for Kathleen Fuller on "Not Your Mother's Diet" was a joy and a pleasure. I consider her one of the foremost experts on eating issues.
What she addresses in this book can help everyone who wants to get a handle on the relationship they have with food. Her common sense and down-to-earth approach helps reveal the psychology behind many eating disorders and dispels the myths that perpetrate cycles of self-abuse. Her ideas and exercises are engaging and effectively lead readers to new states of consciousness where they can fully love themselves and face the future with joy and optimism about making their dreams come true -- sometimes for the first time in their lives. This book might make that kind of difference in your life, too!
I considered it an honor and a blessing to have worked with Kathleen Fuller, PhD on this project. I am optimistic about future creative works she has planned; I'm excited to see what develops. I'd welcome the opportunity to work with her again in the future.
Great Book - In Fact Life Changing., April 26, 2009
This is a great book to read. It helped me to understand my unhealthy eating behaviors and then I was able to replace my unhealthy eating behaviors with healthy ones. I definitely recommend this book. Dr. Fuller also provides easy tools that helped me along the way.
I was honored to be asked to write a foreword for Dr. Kathleen Fuller's book, "Not Your Mother's Diet - The Cure for your Eating Issues".
Food is in our thoughts a lot. Some people report they think about food more than sex! As we all know, procreation and the need for nourishment are natural aspects of life. In "Not Your Mother's Diet - The Cure for your Eating Issues", Dr, Fuller shares fun and imaginative ways to return your thoughts about food to balance -- and put the real you back in control of your life.
Also, be honest, if food plays too large a role in your life--if you live to eat instead of eating to live--the answers to your weight dilemma will probably be found in a fresh, empowering attitude adjustment.
Eating inappropriately can be a mental or emotional habit or a sign of a lusting for certain foods. In either case, if the consequences of poor dietary choices are no longer desired, you can "re-map" your mind and satisfy your emotional emptiness in ways that don't involve food.
As I stated in my foreword to this book, "the author takes a complex subject and makes it understandable. Eating issues are so startlingly multifaceted that certainly what you have heard and read in the past was one expert's approach to just a sliver of this expansive subject. Dr. Fuller not only broadens the horizons of weight problems, eating disorder issues and body image challenges to a much more eclectic view, she makes it all comprehensible."
Get the book. Read it. Use it as a workbook. Turn your old stumbling blocks into your new stepping stones!
"Let your liberating adventure begin. The Cure for your Eating Issues starts now."

Finally a special book on eating problems!, August 6, 2009
Kathleen Fuller's, Not you Mother's Diet: The Cure for your Eating Issues, is an amazingly well written book on the very complex topic of eating problems. As a Psychologist in the field for thirty years I have come across many interesting books on this subject, however, most were either too complex or too basic for the average reader. This book on the other hand is the perfect balance. It is very specific with numerous real life examples and easy techniques that are really helpful. It's a type of workbook that doesn't read like a typical workbook, which are often too difficult to read and digest. Dr.Fuller's book is a sweet, loving, and gentle read, easy to get through, yet, packed with so many practical hands on techniques that are so useful. I have already recommended this fantastic book to many family, friends, and patients/clients, and have found it useful as a psychotherapist myself in my own clinical work with patients. In addition, the techniques in this book are easiy generalizable to other problems like stress, anxiety, and depression. I give this fantastic book my highest review/recommendation!
New Tools for Healthy Eating and Accepting Body, July 11, 2009
Dr Fuller is a real world therapist who has "been there and done that" on so many levels--from her own personal roller coaster of eating disorders to her many years as a therapist counseling and guiding her patients to healthy body image and positive self esteem.
What I really liked about the book is the many tools she provides to help you get thru and past the myrid of issues that negative body beliefs and food misconceptions keep you stuck.
Thanks Kathleen for assisting me in releasing these self-limiting beliefs about myself and onto a lighter and healthier me.
Not Your Mother's Diet is different from any other diet book I've read. The author doesn't look at counting calories, eating only specific foods, or exercising x number of days per week. There are plenty of resources for that kind of thing, Instead, this book goes to the core of the problem. Simply put, unhealthy habits illustrate how we feel about ourselves. Are we stuffing emotions? Do we use that number on the scale to berate ourselves for not being perfect?
I really think that most people today have an inaccurate picture of what a woman should look like. Not only it is unrealistic for a grown woman to be a size 0 but it's absolutely unhealthy. The really sick part though is that we as women actually try to make ourselves into these caricatures no matter what the cost to our health, our self esteem, or even our relationships.
I like the approach set out in Not Your Mother's Diet. Essentially, learn and understand yourself so that you can love yourself and treat yourself with the care and respect you deserve. Let go of all the senseless babble that that only serves as an excuse to punish yourself for wrongs you never actually committed.
Putting Order Into Your Disorder, October 12, 2009
Kathleen Fuller's book was not only enlightening and informative, but warm and personal. As you read it you could sense it was written from the heart of someone who knew firsthand how it is to live with an eating disorder. I felt she was knowledgeable and thorugh on the subject of eating disorders. She not only introduced practical situations and examples, but offered workable solutions. I liked the way she incorporated our thoughts and feelings into journaling about our disorder and wrong thinking when it comes to body image. I also appreciated her spiritual references to a 12 step program which has proven successful with other addictions. Not Your Mother's Diet: The Cure for Your Eating Issues [...]
A Brilliant Book that Introduces You as Soul for Curing Your Eating Issues, November 27, 2009
"Not Your MOTHER'S DIET" by Kathleen Fuller, PH.D., is brilliant. It speaks to me of the wholeness of Self; that life is change and in our willingness to accept it, helps us to create and embrace an ever expanding awareness of who we truly are; Soul.
A blueprint for navigating all aspects of life is designed from chapter to chapter. It highlights the all important key, that once we accept who we really are, Soul, we then have the opportunity to shift our perspective to being Self-Responsible. This sense of Self-Responsibility enables one to enjoy a greater sense of freedom... no longer following the dictates of pre-programmed limitations or expectations.
Kathleen has done a great service in writing this book. One recognizes truth when one hears it. A great bonus are the techniques offered for everyday practical use and do check out the chapter on The Journey Beyond...and the singing of the HU....it is life changing. [...]
