Lacoste Fall 2010 Show,
NY: Runway-still thin?
Some might claim that fashion is a bad role model because it casts hyper-thin models who allegedly encourage eating disorders. Not at Lacoste, where the models on the runway were exemplars of fresh faced health, and even the legendarily sad-eyed Russian model Vlada Roslyakova looked like she had just come back from a week at 8,000 feet in the Alps.( But still too thin!)

Mindfulness for Eating disorders is an important awareness skill in which you learn to be the observer of thoughts and emotions as they arise in your mind. By establishing a conscious relationship with the contents of your mind, your developing the art of listening, without indulging in thinking about what you are experiencing or reacting to your inner feelings by wanting things to be different than they are. The practice gives you the opportunity to be completely present a very direct way while watching very carefully for any tendency to react that may take you away from that direct experience. What we may usually do is be consumed by our habitual reactions of liking and disliking and the endless proliferation of thinking, planning and trying to fix things. You can learn to put these in their place, and allow them to emerge later after establishing the ground of mindful listening.

Pro Soda Tax Ads Heat Up in N.Y.

An ad battle around a proposed sugar tax in New York is happening with advocates claiming such a move is a reasonable price to pay for better health. It is directly aimed at the American Beverage Association's ad position that the tax would be a heavy weight on consumers. It will be a closely watched fight as such proposals -- as with calorie counts on menus and smoking laws -- tend to spill across state borders.

When food becomes a lethal weapon

by Shani Silverstein
“I was young and ill and certainly had no formal knowledge of eating disorders. But I understood enough to realize that these conversations were pointless; it was as if we were speaking different languages. I would then fall silent, wishing there were some magic words I could say that would make it all go away for you. But I didn't have any magic. If I did, I would have used it for myself as well.”

First Lady on Childhood Obesity
Obama's straight talk and balanced approach is part of what makes her the right crusader for this cause. She and her family didn't hide their problems behind euphemisms. They didn't resort to extreme diets. They altered their eating habits — fruits and vegetables, smaller portions — increased their exercise and shed the excess pounds. It is hoped Obama's example can help turn the country's couch potatoes into lovers of tomatoes — and green beans, carrots, asparagus, brussel sprouts ...

How's this for "playing Barbie?" Give her a pot belly. Chop her flowing hair into a Mohawk. Or remodel her torso to flatten out her chest.
Those were a few of the creative makeovers the iconic fashion doll got Saturday at a "Barbie jamming" event in Peterborough, where kids were invited to use clay, fabric, paints – and their imaginations – to make her look more like a real female.

Normal' Dieter or Eating Disorder?
A dieter, unlike the anorexia sufferer, is more likely to openly discuss that they are dieting, and more able to have a treat/break from dieting (for example at a birthday/wedding), and stop when they reach a goal weight. They are also fairly comfortable admitting to the difficulties they are experiencing in following the particular diet such as feelings of wanting to binge on a craved item of food or feeling deprived that everyone else is consuming a calorific dessert besides them. These behaviors, however, can become obsessive or compulsive and then out of control. Then these dieting behaviors become life threatening.

This Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010 photo shows students preparing a vegetable soup at Sharon Elementary... (AP)
The third and fourth graders at Sharon Elementary know where the veggies in their soup come from because they've visited the farms. They know the nutritional value of the carrots, onions and cabbage because they've studied them in class, and they know how they're grown because they've nurtured them in raised beds out back.
The 105-student school is part of the National Farm to School Network, aimed at getting healthier meals into school cafeterias, teaching kids about agriculture and nutrition and supporting local farmers.

By Christy Fantz, fantz@coloradodaily.co
Kirsten Haglund, Miss America 2008, shares on campus about her adolescent struggle with anorexia.
She said, “After an adolescent battle with anorexia, wearing a smile for the world is often challenging.”
"Eating disorders have become an epidemic these days," said Haglund, who will speak at the University of Colorado on Tuesday as part of National Eating Disorders Week. "There is a lot of pressure and extra stress in a college student's life. Many young women struggle in this diet culture ... it's like a big melting pot, which can lend toward the formation of an eating disorder."

When a Weight-Obsessed Partner 'Keeps You Fat'

THE NEW YORK TIMES
Previously on the Consults blog, Dr. Kathryn Zerbe, professor of psychiatry at Oregon Health and Science University, took readers' questions on a binge eating, anorexia and other eating disorders. Here, Dr. Zerbe answers a man who said that his former wife, who suffered from bulimia, was trying to "keep me fat."Q.Back 40 years ago I was married to a woman who secretly threw up after almost every dinner. (I didn't know to call it bulimia back then, but I knew about it.) Oddly, she insisted that I eat heaping meals with her even though I was not bulimic.”

Dressed to fill as shop mannequins go from a size ten to curvy 16
By David Leask
DESIGNERS have been whispering it for months. Campaigners have been demanding it for years. But now curves really are back in fashion.
Debenhams yesterday became the first mainstream High Street retailer to replace some of its size ten mannequins with ones that actually resemble an average British woman.
The department store chain has put some size 16 dummies in the windows.
The mannequins at Debenhams are currently showing off a new range of clothing called Principles by Ben de Lisi. The firm has made it clear that it sees normal-sized woman as its core market for fashion: it sells 42 per cent of its clothing in sizes 14 and 16.
Debenhams head of creative, Mark Stevens, reported: "We are proud to offer a broad and varied choice for women of all ages, shapes and sizes in store. So we thought we should reflect this in our window displays. If it's popular with customers we would love to roll it out."
Most retailers only show their clothes on size ten mannequins. The average British woman is a size 16 – which caters for vital statistics of 40-33-42. Scottish women tend to be a bit slimmer – despite the nation's reputation for poor diet and obesity. Under a quarter of Scottish women can fit a size ten or below, more than their English, Welsh and Irish cousins. Just under one in five Scottish women, meanwhile, are size 18 or above.
