Doubts About Dieting?

Doubts About Dieting?
It only takes losing five percent of body weight (think 10 pounds off someone weighing 200 pounds) to have a “clinically significant benefit.” Lowering and maintaining a healthy weight can reduce high blood pressure, cholesterol and risk of heart disease while improving self-image and esteem. Doubts about the benefits of dieting are winning an East Carolina University professor’s national recognition and acclaim.

Limit celebrity media consumption

Limit celebrity media consumption
“A five-year study by the AAP found that the more frequently a girl reads those fashion magazines, the more likely she is to resort to extreme weight control behaviors. What’s more: when a celebrity goes on a diet, 70 percent of between girls want to as well. Teach your child to be media literate and to resist the ways television, movies, and magazines portray underweight women as glamorous and muscle-bound men as all-powerful. While you’re at it, put down those celebrity and fashion magazines yourself.” It’s more important to talk with your children about what is healthy and be a model for healthy body image and healthy eating.  You can be a positive example.  Children learn what they see you do, not what we as parents preach.

New York TimesAustralian Study- Women Who Live with a Partner Gain More Weight

“It’s interesting and brings out some important points,” said Maureen A. Murtaugh, an associate professor of epidemiology at the University of Utah who has published widely on weight gain in women. Perhaps, she suggested, a more active social life may help explain why women with partners gain more weight.

“Think of going to a restaurant,” Dr. Murtaugh said. “They serve a 6-foot man the same amount as they serve me, even though I’m 5 feet 5 inches and 60 pounds lighter.”

The study included only women, but the researchers cited one earlier study that showed an increase in obesity among men who had children, adding further evidence that social and behavioral factors are part of the explanation.

Dr. Dobson said the finding of weight gain among all the women, with families or without, was troubling.

“This is a general health concern,” she said. “Getting married or moving in with a partner and having a baby are events that trigger even further weight gain.

Daniel Craig
James Bond -who is famed for his toned physique - recently revealed he wants to get "old and fat" and only diets when he is preparing for a film role.

He said: "I genuinely don't diet. I eat a full breakfast, full lunch, full dinner and once or twice a week I might even drink Guinness and red wine and all that stuff. Otherwise you go insane. You get into a stupid place. I'm obsessive enough about getting fit, it's ridiculous.”

I love him because he is real.

Susie Orbach’s (Princess Diana’s Therapist) latest book is Bodies

Susie Orbach’s (Princess Diana’s Therapist)  latest book is Bodies

‘In which she tells us what has happened to our bodies in the three decades since she wrote about fat being a feminist issue. “The problems I sought to describe have mushroomed,” she writes. The contemporary body is a battleground. In fact, people have never felt worse about their bodies than they do now. Makers of face creams are telling us we are too wrinkly; owners of gyms are telling us we’re too flabby; plastic surgeons are telling us our faces are all wrong. We are constantly being told that we look unattractive – and the terrible thing is that we believe it.

In the book, she talks about “the merchants of body hatred”. Her point is that, if people are anxious and needy, they make better consumers; if they are anxious about something as fundamental as their bodies, they are easy prey for marketers.’ By William Leith

I had to put this ad in for ECONOMIZING Three-packs of men's briefs are coming back due to the recession. But at the same time, Mr. Kleinmann said, more expensive body-shaping styles for men, a new category of underwear designed to enhance certain body parts and minimize others, are taking off. This looks like the body image ads are promoting perfect bodies for men.

We engaged in a love-hate relationship with food. Worshipping TV chefs, the more bad-mouthed the better. Band Aid Diets such as the Florida, Atkins, CSIRO or other diets were popular. Then how many developed eating disorders as we came one of the world's most obese nations?

Women are growing

Women are growing

The fantasy shape is shrinking. As the feminist writer Naomi Wolf wrote in The Beauty Myth (1990), a decade ago the average model had been 8 per cent lighter than the average woman. But by 1990, models were 23 per cent lighter. From a recent survey by Wired magazine , between the 1960s and today, it was found that the body mass index of Playboy Playmates has, on average, declined from 19.2 to 17.6, while that of real women has risen from 22.2 to 26.8.

2 Tips for Families to set a Healthy Mental & Emotional Foundation to Help Avoid Eating Disorders!

2 Tips for Families to set a Healthy Mental & Emotional Foundation to Help Avoid Eating Disorders!
Tip: “For families with young children, crafts and creative projects are ways for parents to spend time with their children. For older children, game nights and storytelling activities work well. Spending time outdoors works well with all age groups,” Jody Kuhl, director of Corpus Christi Family Outreach said.

Tip: Families eating together communicate better according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Teens who regularly eat with their families have a decreased risk for alcohol and drug abuse or developing eating disorders. Kuhl suggested asking children about the highs and lows of their day. The key is to start early and make it a fun habit.

Eur Child Adolesc Psychiatry. 2009 Dec 24;

A history of anorexia is one of the biggest red flags for osteoporosis
“A history of anorexia is one of the biggest red flags for osteoporosis, says Columbia University endocrinologist Elizabeth Shane, who studies osteopenia—the early stage of osteoporosis—in younger women. That's because when a woman's body weight drops too low, it lowers hormone levels, and she typically starts skipping periods.” "Anything that lowers estrogen levels interferes with bone building," Shane says.

Let’s not forget natural progesterone and it’s positive effects for bone density, according to Dr. John  R .Lee’s Hormone Hotline.

The Critical Eye

The Daily Mail has criticized two celebrities today. Victoria Beckham now 35 is, it appears, too thin. The fact that she has always been thin seems to have completely missed The Mail’s attention.

The Critical Eye
While Paul Hogan, now 70, is charged with eating too much and found guilty of the unforgivable crime a celeb can commit, he is growing old with his wife of 20 years.

So we have to be thin, but not too thin as judged by the subjective standards of the press and we can only have just the right amount of fat on our bodies.  Body Blunders in the press’s view.

While she has moved on from leg lifts to political activism and the occasional acting role, he is about to release two new videos, “Sweating to the Oldies 5” and “Toning to the Oldies” — his 58th and 59th.  GO Richard!

Orthorexia?

It's normal to change what you eat to improve your health, treat an illness or lose weight. Usually, people focus less on what they eat once they're established their new eating habits. However, those with orthorexia nervosa remained consumed with what foods they allow themselves to eat, and then feel guilty about themselves if they fail to stick to their diet.
